In everyday life, it can be so easy to get caught up with things like work, school, or other responsibilities. Being in college has added a whole other level of stress and busyness in my life and for a few moments, I lost myself. But in times like that it’s important to retain a sense of self and remember that your mental, emotional, and physical needs are just as important as all the other things going on in your life. I always have to remember to take care of myself. Like Miss Lauryn Hill said “how you gone win when you ain’t right within?”. Self-care doesn’t just mean putting on a mask and listening to The Internet (don’t get me wrong, this a mood too), it means genuinely taking care of your mind, body, and soul. This is where the not-so-pretty part rears its head. Another part of taking care of your inner spirit is to reevaluate what is going on in your life and make adjustments to add to your happiness, not detract. That means that you have to get real with yourself to recognize the toxins in your life (even if they are self-induced) and make efforts to fix them. I know this is a lot easier said than done, but this is the work that goes a long way towards your overall happiness.
However you chose to self-indulge, just make sure you do. Personally, I like to enjoy my solitude. I love taking a few moments to myself to take some deep breathes, light a candle, read poetry, and listen to some neo-soul. Maybe taking a light run, watching reruns of your favorite show, or catching up on rest is more your jam. All are accepted and valid as long as it makes YOU happy. Little actions like these may sound minuscule, but they make tough days a little better.
Don’t forget to take some time for yourself not just on Sunday, but everyday 😉
